Project Overview
There are a number of reasons why moving is one of the most stressful events in a person’s life. The main causes are a mix of significant change, difficult choices, financial strain, an absence of control and unanticipated setbacks. Among these issues is also the realization that one has acquired more possessions than one really needs. The next step now is how to get rid of them.

UX + UI Design, Visual design, Branding, User flow, Research, Prototyping + Testing
Figma, Fig jam, Zoom, Google Forms
People who are moving homes need to declutter in a way that makes a positive impact.
How might we design a platform that makes it easier for people to declutter and donate possessions before moving, while ensuring a positive and sustainable impact on their community?
The primary goals of the research were to:
- Understand the challenges people face during the moving process.
- Identify the type of assistance individuals seek when moving.
- Discover how to improve the overall moving experience by offering a decluttering and donation solution.
My Design Process
Research Methodology
To achieve these goals, I conducted:
- Competitive Analysis: I researched existing competitors to understand their strategies around decluttering and moving services offered.
- User Interviews: Interviewed individuals who had recently moved or were planning to move. This qualitative data provided valuable insights into their challenges and pain points.
User Interviews
I spoke to people who fall into the following categories:
- People who are currently moving house.
- People who have moved in the past six months.
- People who are planning on moving in the next few months
Key Questions
What challenges did you face during your last move?
Did you seek any assistance during the moving process? If so, what kind?
If you could improve one aspect of the moving process, what would it be?
This is what I found:
From the user interviews, key themes emerged through affinity mapping, highlighting several pain points and needs:
Emotional Overwhelm
Moving is emotionally draining and often overwhelming due to the number of tasks and decisions involved.
Physical Strain
The physical effort required to move, pack, and sort possessions is exhausting.
Unforeseen Costs
Financial stress is a significant concern, with unexpected moving costs adding pressure.
Decluttering Confusion
Many users struggle with deciding what to keep and what to get rid of.
Need for Assistance
Users expressed a need for help with packing, sorting, and donating items they no longer needed.
User Personas
With the knowledge and insights gained through the interviews, personas were created to understand the unique qualities, preferences and behaviours of the people most likely to benefit from the website.
Point of View
- Overwhelmed individuals need a way to efficiently declutter before moving, because they often accumulate more items than they need.
- Busy people moving homes need a way to organize their tasks, because the number of responsibilities and decisions required can be overwhelming.
- Movers need emotional support during the moving process, because the stress and anxiety of moving can leave them feeling mentally/emotionally drained.
How Might We
- How might we help busy people move homes more efficiently?
- How might we help people easily declutter their homes prior to them moving?
- How might we help provide emotional support for people who are feeling stressed out by the process of moving?
Card Sort & Sitemap
Card sorting is a method used to help design or evaluate the information architecture of a site. Knowing how users group information will help; build the structure for the website, decide what to put on the homepage, then label categories and navigation. I conducted an open card sort with 4 participants. The participants were asked a screener question “Have you ever moved homes?” If their response was yes, they were allowed to proceed with the sorting exercise. Users created categories and group information which informed the design of the sitemap.
Low - Mid Fidelity Wireframes
I started with low-fidelity wireframes to explore different layouts and navigation options. These wireframes focused on essential features like signing up and the donation flow.
High Fidelity Wireframes
I then proceeded to design high fidelity wireframes applying branding and vibrant imagery.
Usability Testing
All users successfully navigated both task flows within the proposed timeframe. The format is well-organized and easy to navigate. In the donation flow, users appreciated the ability to describe and upload images of items they wished to donate. With a visually appealing interface and a clear process, the users could easily follow the steps.
Add more categories to the item listing page for better organisation.
Improve the input feedback system with color-coded success and error messages.
Explore adding a feature to schedule donation pickups for added convenience.

Conclusion
By using a user-centred design process, I was able to craft a solution that not only met the functional needs of individuals moving, but also fostered a sense of community and sustainability. The process of researching, wireframing, prototyping and testing helped me ensure that the platform addressed user pain points and created a meaningful experience.
Next Steps:
- Integrate the ability to schedule donation pickups.
- Continue user testing to refine and enhance the donation and decluttering processes.
